Biographical Statement
My name is Crystal Cofield Davis. I am a 43 year old native of Louisburg, NC. I am the Assistant Principal at Long Mill Elementary School. This position sparked an interest in me because of the potential work with stakeholders of our community to promote equity among students and to close the achievement gaps in many areas, including gender, socio-economic levels, race, ethnicity, and learning capabilities.
I am currently serving in my first administrative role. As assistant principal, I have learned a tremendous amount about school wide structures and procedures. I have had opportunities to build relationships with students, staff, parents, and other community stakeholders. My teaching experiences have allowed me to work with students of Franklin County from a variety of backgrounds. In my 17 years in education, I have had the opportunity to teach many content areas including middle grades science, math, and social studies. I also have secondary science experience as I have taught high school earth and environmental science and applied chemistry. Because I consider myself a lifelong learner, I am constantly reflecting on my practices and taking the necessary steps to stay current with education as it evolves. I also attempted to integrate technology and new ways of thinking about lessons in an effort to create 21st Century learners. Prior to teaching in Franklin County Schools, I worked closely with a summer camp director in creating age appropriate academic and enrichment curriculum for 3 years.
My purpose for applying to NC State University’s graduate program is to obtain advanced degrees in the field of education. As a curriculum resource teacher and a site director of an academic enrichment program, I strive to maintain a good rapport with teachers, students and my community. In working with these various groups of people, I see a variety of needs that must be met in order to reach a common goal producing confident, intelligent, young thinkers who use good judgment and strive to reach maximum potential. I see faculty and staff members working diligently to keep up with the educational system as it evolves, and I see a community that deserves the fresh new ideas that these young citizens will have to offer. Therefore, I plan to obtain a Master’s degree in School Administration. I believe that this field of study will assist me in becoming an individual who will affect change. I plan to work on obtaining my Doctorate’s degree in some aspect of education also. After serving in school systems with the skills that I will acquire, I would ultimately like to establish my own facility that will cater to the needs of young people. The facility that I desire to open will involve academic and enrichment programs that bridge educational gaps, transcend barriers, and cause students to become more successful.
